There was more work involved than I initially expected, but this was due to my unit and not the camera. Typically, you mount your camera, run black to ground, red to your car's tail light, video cable to your screen and call it a day. If you have a head unit that will take a back up camera, it isn't this simple so I'll explain my installation problems and solutions. Several reviews complain about things that are due to incorrect installation.
I have an AVIC7000NEX. The unit needs to have a reverse signal (purple and white in my case) connected to the unit, otherwise the unit won't know when to switch to the camera. My unit also has the option to turn on the camera while you're driving, which I wanted.
For it all to work as intended, I had to run 3 cables to my unit.
1. The video cable as usual.
2. Reverse signal cable from rail light. Since my 2012 Frontier doesn't have a dedicated "reverse signal" cable, I ran a cable from my tail light to my unit's purple/white reserve signal cable. Could have saved wire and time if I found that cable in the shifter, but didn't bother, I went with what was certain.
3. Power cable. My unit has a proprietary connector for their own camera, so I just figured out which one was power and spliced into it. This way the camera only goes on when in reverse, or when I select it to come on as I'm driving.
Units that have more features will come with extra effort when installing, I learned this through several hours of frustration and a couple blown fuses.
The camera itself feels sturdy. Resolution is great. LEDs don't help, in fact, they add glare to either side at night so I've covered the LEDs with electrical tape for now. What I will do is upgrade my back up lights in my truck with britghter LEDs instead of the OEM halogen and find a more permanent solution to covering the LEDs (maybe plastidip).
The button on my camera looks exposed, see photo, not sure of this is normal or if it's missing something but I covered it with water proofing shrink tape.
Overall the camera works great, just some extra installation due to my unit. Bummer about the LEDs, but that's an easy fix, as with the button.
